# Cloudflare CWS: test one rule.

Nikita Lutsenko on Cloudflare Cloud Workload Security beta: a proposed 3tf pilot, routing limits and a practical test before production use.

The idea in brief

I would test one prohibited change and one permitted operation, then verify routing and ownership before considering a production rollout.

## A check before the change

On 19 October, Cloudflare announced the beta of Cloud Workload Security: a way to evaluate cloud API requests before they reach a provider. Its documented example blocks a request that would make an R2 storage bucket public. That is the detail I find useful. A rule has to stop a specific mistake at the point where it could happen.

For a business owner, the question is simple: which routine change could expose something that should stay private? I would start there, before comparing product dashboards or adding another security subscription.

## What I would test at 3tf

I want our first experiment to be deliberately narrow: an empty test bucket, one prohibited change and evidence that the rule works. This is a proposed internal pilot, not a system we have already deployed or a result we have achieved for a client.

Cloudflare's architecture matters. A proxy runs in your environment and checks requests routed through it; policies are managed in the dashboard. Turning on a policy does not prove every route to a resource passes through that proxy. I would ask our technical team to draw those routes before claiming that a workflow is covered.

My adoption criterion would be a pair of outcomes: the prohibited change is rejected, while the approved operation still works. A control that stops the team doing its job will invite workarounds. We should measure both sides.

## Three practical starting points

**A customer document portal.** A Dubai service business might keep uploads in private object storage. I would use synthetic files to test whether the specific public-access operation is blocked. The next discussion would cover other access paths, permissions and application links. One successful test cannot establish that all customer documents are protected.

**A website deployment workflow.** Before a campaign launch, developers may change storage settings alongside application updates. I would propose a staging exercise with an explicitly scoped policy and a named owner for rejected requests. The useful measure is whether legitimate releases continue without unexpected interruptions.

**A shared development environment.** Where several people or scripts change cloud resources, I would compare the intended policy with actual request decisions. This could reveal gaps in routing or overly broad rules. Each integration needs its own compatibility check; I would not assume support for every cloud service or tool.

## How I would run the pilot

First, agree on the forbidden action in plain English. Then ask a technical owner to follow Cloudflare's test-bucket walkthrough, enable enforcement and verify the resource's final state after both permitted and rejected operations. Keep real customer data out of the experiment.

Record the request, expected decision, actual decision and time needed to investigate an unexpected result. Review how unmatched requests and policy errors are handled. Agree on a recovery procedure before considering a production rollout.

## What UAE teams should check

CWS is in beta. Cloudflare says a Zero Trust subscription is required and its Free plan is sufficient; that does not remove engineering, hosting or operational costs. The setup guide also requires technical access and a locally operated proxy.

The reviewed announcement does not establish UAE-specific hosting, data residency or regulatory suitability. Those need separate review for the intended deployment. Existing cloud permissions still matter.

My conclusion: this deserves a small, observable experiment. Before we add it to a delivery standard at 3tf, I want evidence about coverage, false blocks and ownership. A precise rule with a clear test is a better starting point than a broad promise of safety.
